The Romans began with monarchy,a government run by a king or queen, their city was ‘designed for greatness’ by the end of the 6th century with the kings ousted a republic oligarchy was made with 2 chief magistrates, known consuls, from the aristocratic class elected annually around the beginning of the principate roman society was defined in 3 main classes, which turn gradually became more defined during the empire. The Roman religion was centered around gods and expectations for events usually involved the gods in some way(The Twelve Tables)
The fall of the roman empire is the biggest corruption in ancient Rome. No one knows when it began but it ended around 476 A.D. There is several reasons that the empire fell, there was declines in moral and values, public health problems this was caused by mostly un-pure water they tried to purify this by putting it through lead pipes for the wealthy but the wealthy death rate increased and the death affected people who were homeless and living on the streets because of disease the homeless got sick and died.(Rome Info)
There was political corruption, this began with having to choose a new emperor, the romans never created a system to choose a new emperor. the choice was between the old emperor and the senate.The emperors Praetorian Guard was then to choose a new emperor, Then in 186 A. D. the army strangled the new emperor. The practice began to selling the throne to the highest bidder during the next 100 years they had 37 emperors, 25 were removed from office by assassination.(Rome Info)
There became people becoming unemployment began, that left people without money and becoming homeless,this increased the crime rate. The inflation soon began where all prices increased,beginning after the reign of Marcus Aurelius. Eventually people were being paid in food clothes. Urban decay shortly after began Wealthy Romans lived in a domus, or house, with marble walls, floors with intricate colored tiles, and windows made of small panes of glass. Most Romans, however, were not rich, They lived in small smelly rooms in apartment houses with six or more stories called islands. Every island covered an entire block. At one time there were 44,000 apartment houses within the city walls of Rome. Anyone who couldn’t pay rent were moved to the crime infested streets. This made the cities die out.(Rome Info)
With the last 400 years of the roman empire there was inferior technology,this was caused by limiting the scientific achievements to engineering and public services, they built road, bridges, and aqueducts.But sense the romans relied so much on human and animal labor, they couldn’t invent new machines or new technology to produce better goods. They were no longer ahead of other civilizations they were losing territory and could no longer maintain legions. Military spending was also apart of the roman fall. Military spending left few resources such as public houses and maintaining roads. The Romans soon lost their will to defend the Empire. The Empire began hiring people from city mobs and foreign countries. This army was unreliable and very expensive, the Emperors were forced to raise taxes frequently, which led again to inflammation. Finally the western part of Roman Empire was taken over by Germans. Roads and bridges were left in abandoned cities could not be maintained without goods from the farms,trade and business began to disappear.
